Mrs. Mellie Jean Latham left this earthly home to join her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 27, 1938, to George and Ruby Northcut Whitus in Rains County, Texas. She lived her life in Rains and Wood County areas before moving to Greenville in her later years.
Jean was a professional seamstress for many years. She made her children’s clothes in the early years and doll clothes for her grands in later years.
She had a love of gardening and canning. She had a weakness for sweets; not only baking them for her family and neighbors but also eating them. She loved butterfingers and coffee and frequented many garage sales and could turn anything she found into a beautiful piece.
She lived her entire life for the Lord, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She would light up with a beautiful smile, and her eyes would twinkle anytime she saw them. She held her own bible study every morning and she was dedicated to reading and learning the word of God. One of her final goals was to make it through the book of Revelation before passing, and as she always did, she accomplished this goal.
She is survived by her two daughters, Rantha Bobbitt and Paula Pogue; grandchildren, Starla Shinn; and husband Donald, and Cameron Bobbitt and wife Kayla; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Shinn, Kenzie Shinn, Easton Bobbitt, Amelia Bobbitt, and Rorie Bobbitt; sister, Peggy Geraldon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents, George and Ruby Northcut Whitus; her siblings, Thelma McQueen, Curtis Whitus, Judy Whitus, Jimmy Whitus, and John Kenneth Whitus.
The family is deeply grateful to Amber Green who provided loving care and friendship during her final weeks.
Services for Mrs. Latham will be private.
