Marvin Lake “Skeeter” Matthews, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on March 14th, 2026, at the age of 90 in his Gladewater home after a brief illness.
The son of John Gaftner Matthews and Bessie Lake Matthews, Marvin grew up in Pittsburg, Texas. He was born there on December 14th, 1935, and graduated from Pittsburg ISD in the Class of 1954, where he was class president. In his early 20s, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served at Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort Dix, New Jersey; and in Germany, where he worked as an auto mechanic. He valued his military service deeply and achieved the rank of SP5 E5.
Following his honorable discharge, Marvin returned to Pittsburg, where he later married the love of his life, Anita “Sue” Matthews. They spent most of their 58-year marriage in Pittsburg, where Marvin worked for 39 years with South Western Bell Telephone Company. After retiring, he enjoyed camping, watching football and old westerns, yard work, and spending time outdoors—especially relaxing on his back porch while watching hummingbirds.
Later, Marvin and Sue moved to Gladewater, Texas, to be closer to their daughter, Susan, and their granddaughter, Kenna. He rarely missed an event his granddaughter was involved in, attending local high school games to support her and proudly calling the Hogs when she performed as a Razorback twirler. Anyone who knew Skeeter knew he was a hardworking man with a deep love for his family, and he showed that love in everything he did.
Marvin is survived by his daughter, Susan Matthews; his granddaughter, Kenna Stutsman; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita Attaway Matthews; his parents, Bessie Lake and John Matthews; his brother, Rex Matthews; his sisters, Evelyn Matthews, Peggy Matthews Cashman, and Anna Howard Casteel. The family is now complete in heaven.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at New Mine Cemetery in Camp County with Scott Moore officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert Attaway, David Shelton Sr., David Shelton Jr., Duane Shelton, Jacob Hefner, Grayson Sherman, Jacob Attaway, Matthew Attaway, and Kyle Attaway. Honorary Pallbearers will be Steve Wooten, Butch Wills, Dave Shortnacy, David Cruson, Ricky Jones, Dave Smith, Larry White, Dwayne Murphy, and Pat Hays. There will be a visitation held before the service from 12:30 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. at the Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsburg.
