Julia Truitt Obituary

Surrounded by her children, Julia Anne Miller Truitt, 93, left this world Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020. Married on Sept. 1, 1950, she was the wife of the late Charles (Charlie) C. Truitt, Jr. and the daughter of late William R. Miller Sr. and Onie Imogene Halbert Miller.

She was born in Nacogdoches Oct. 27, 1927 and grew up there where she graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University and was a member of the Pine Burr Sorority. During her years in college, she represented Nacogdoches as the Watermelon Queen and she was a duchess in the Tyler Rose Festival.

Majoring in art and drama, she taught in the Texas school districts of Galveston, Dallas and White Oak after college. Moving to Pittsburg, after marriage, in 1950, she became very active in St. William Laud Episcopal Church where she was the founder of the Episcopal day school and she also taught Sunday School for many years. In civic and social affairs, she was a member of the Pittsburg Main Street Board, a member of the Pittsburg-Camp County Chamber of Commerce where she received the honor of Woman of the Year; and a lifetime honorary member of the 20th Century Club where she served as a former president.

She served as secretary for Truitt Insurance, the family-owned business for Pittsburg for many years.

Her hobbies were numerous, and not just confined to her younger years. She was an avid traveler and visited seven continents; she enjoyed sky diving, scuba diving, taking care of her yard, flower arranging, creating art sculptures and playing bridge. She volunteered at UT Pittsburg hospital and North East Texas Rural Heritage Museum.

Survivors include three children: Tim Truitt of Pittsburg and wife Turnette; a daughter, Anna Truitt Atkinson, of Chicago and John Truitt of Tyler; two grandchildren, Garrett Truitt of Arlington and Julia Rose Atkinson of Middletown, Conn; niece, Vicki Rabb and husband Joe of Sugarland; nephew, Mike Miller of Los Alamos, NM.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother, William R. Miller, Jr.

Due to Covid-19, the family will have a private mass, funeral and burial. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
