John McCurry Obituary

John Michael McCurry, 84, of Pittsburg, Texas, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2026, at his residence on Lake Bob Sandlin, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Erman Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. McCurry was born March 4, 1942, in Vallejo, California, to John Henry and Hazel Shaddock McCurry. He was a retired Property Tax Service Manager and a devoted member of St. William Laud Episcopal Church in Pittsburg, Texas.

Mike lived a life as rich and colorful as the tropical fish that filled his home. He proudly served his country as an Army cook, a skill he honed to legendary effect, perfecting what those who knew him would readily agree was the world’s best spaghetti, served with generous helpings of love to family and friends. His time in the kitchen never truly ended; feeding people, especially their spirits, was simply part of who he was.

Together with his beloved wife Sandra, Mike ran a pet store that became a true reflection of their shared spirit. Their home was equally alive with remarkable tropical fish, parrots, cats, and dogs, testaments to the 48 joyful years they spent building a life and a menagerie together.

Anyone who knew Mike knew that he was equally and supremely proud of his role as Abdul Farnsworth, the steadfast drummer who kept the beat while his wife Sandra shimmered across the dance floor as Shandria of the Burning Hot Sands of West Texas. Their performances brought laughter, delight, and no small amount of flair to all who witnessed them.

Mike’s faith was the quiet, steady current beneath everything he did. He served his church family at St. William Laud with devotion, and gave generously of his time and heart to the Residents Encounter Christ Weekends held at the Johnston Unit Correctional Facility in Winnsboro, Texas, a program dedicated to helping incarcerated men find their way to God. He believed in redemption, in grace, and in the power of showing up for people who needed it most.

He is survived by his son, Corey McCurry of Grand Prairie, and stepson, Clifford Kent Connor of Irving; nieces, Stacey Ruth, Stacy Hughes, Kelly Debuysere, Tammy Williams-Coy, and Tasche Williams; and nephews, Casey Riley, Patrick Riley, Paul Williams, and Rick Williams.

Mr. McCurry was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra McCurry; his daughter, Julia McCurry; his parents, John Henry and Hazel McCurry; his brother, Donald McCurry; and Mona Riley.
