Mr. John William “J.W.” Hooper, 82, of Pittsburg was born June 1, 1940, in Webster County, Mississippi to William Wesley Hooper and Wilma Inez Shepherd Hooper and passed away on March 28, 2023 at his home.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pittsburg where he served on several committees along with teaching Sunday school for 10 years to the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade boys. He started the Dairy Hart with James Cavender and worked there for 7 years prior to beginning a career that lasted from 1965 to 2005 at Patterson Furniture where he was store manager. He was a member of the Camp County Chamber of Commerce and served his community both on the Planning and Zoning Board and as a council member for the City of Pittsburg.
Mr. Hooper is survived by his wife, Mary Jenkins Hooper of Pittsburg; daughters, Wendy Warren and her husband Jimmy of Big Sandy and Christi Denney and her husband John of Pittsburg; son-in-law, Kent DeWoody of Pittsburg; grandchildren, Kole DeWoody and his wife Jessie, Reece DeWoody and his wife Kayli, Brianne Jones, Austin Jones, Clara Denney, and Adelyn Denney; great grandchildren, Annabeth DeWoody and Rhodes DeWoody; and a brother, Wayne Hooper.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Nita DeWoody; brothers, Chesley Hooper and Charles Cebren Hooper; sister, Dorothy Davis; granddaughter, Kailey Jones.
Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Pittsburg. Bro. Joel Davis will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Melvin Davis, Ross French, Wesley Hooper, Brayden Hooper, Harold Kennington, and Jim Bob Smith.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.
