Jan Bailey Dungan, affectionately known as Jan, Mom, and Gigi, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, in Pittsburg, Texas, at the age of 82, surrounded by her family. Jan was born in Texarkana, Texas, on November 6, 1942.
She is survived by her two children, Jeff Dungan and his wife Kristin of Pittsburg, Texas, and Jeri (Dungan) Stephenson and her husband Reece of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jan also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren: Rachael Dungan and her partner Emily Hoey, Madeline (Dungan) Heaton and her husband Luke, Amanda Stephenson, William Stephenson, Henry Stephenson, and Sarah Stephenson, as well as one great-grandson, Benjamin Stephenson.
Jan moved to Plano at the age of twelve after her mother's passing and graduated from Plano High School in 1960, a class of 49 students. She earned her bachelor's degree in education from North Texas State University. After marrying in 1963, Jan began her teaching career as a second-grade teacher in Allen, Texas. She took a nine-year break to raise her two young children before returning to the classroom to teach fourth grade for many years. She was an active Escadrille Mom, soccer mom, and chaperone for anything involving Jeff and Jeri. She was always present, her proud, nervous smile in place, for every performance, no matter how small or how far she had to travel. In the mid-1990s, she earned her Master's degree from East Texas State University and subsequently became a school counselor at Allen ISD. Jan dedicated her entire 33-year teaching career to Allen ISD and found immense joy in reconnecting with her former students long after they left her classroom.
Following her retirement, Jan remained active in various groups, including the Allen Retired Teachers Association, Red Hat Ladies, the First United Methodist Church of Allen, the Dallas Emmaus Community, her bridge club, bunco group, and book club.
Jan cherished her time with friends and family through her many activities and travels, including her long-running Friday night dinner group. She explored all 50 states with loved ones and friends. Her six grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she made every effort to attend their birthdays, school events, and holidays. She loved spending holidays in Colorado Springs and Bryan/College Station to be close to her beloved family. Family game nights, particularly Mexican Train and 42, were among her favorite activities.
Jan was known for her sense of humor, easygoing personality, and unique Texas idioms. Above all, her greatest gift was her ability to love fiercely.
A memorial service for Jan will be held on Saturday, October 11th, at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, Texas. A reception and lunch will follow in the fellowship hall, where guests are invited to share stories and celebrate Jan's profound impact on their lives.
