A memorial service will be held at a later date for James Robert Olson, 86, of Pittsburg. Arrangements are under the directions of Erman Smith Funeral Home. Mr. Olson passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025. A beloved father, grandfather, veteran, writer, and artist, Jim lived a life full of curiosity, creativity, and humor.
Born on August 24, 1938, Jim graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He proudly served as a U.S. Marine before pursuing a career in optometry, caring for countless patients during his years at Shopko Optical. His passion for storytelling led him to become a published author whose words touched the lives and hearts of many. Whether through books, brushstrokes, or hand-carved wood, Jim’s creativity knew no bounds.
He is survived by his son, Eric and wife, Kristen Olson and daughter, Katherine and husband, Marc Menkemeller, as well as his cherished grandson, Mikhael Menkemeller. Jim was a devoted father who especially loved being a father and was always proud of the family he raised.
Jim is preceded in death by his son, Andrew Olson, his parents, and longtime life partner, Frances.
In addition to his professional and creative accomplishments, Jim was a dedicated volunteer at the Heritage Museum, where he shared his love of history and connection to community. He had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor often joking that he hoped to go out at the hands of a jealous husband.
Jim will be remembered for his generous spirit, his deep well of stories, his quiet artistry, and the way he made people laugh. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family who loved him.
