Jacqueline Hawkins Obituary

Service for Jackie Sims Hawkins, 79, of Pittsburg, will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church, Pittsburg.  Interment will be in Leesburg Cemetery in Camp County following the service.  A visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service.  Arrangements are under the direction of Erman Smith Funeral Home.  Mrs. Hawkins passed away at her home in Pittsburg on July 5, 2020.

Mrs. Hawkins was born March 29, 1941 in Dallas, TX to Jack and Ann Sims.  She retired from a long teaching career which included teaching kindergarten at First Baptist Church for 7 years, and the Pittsburg Primary School for 27 years.  She graduated from East Texas State University, and later completed her Master’s Degree at the University of Texas at Tyler.  Post graduate studies were at Texas Women’s University in Denton. 

Jackie was very active in her church and civic activities.  She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pittsburg, where she taught Sunday School and Training Union, Children’s Choir, and Vacation Bible School.  She also sang in the adult choir and played in the bell choir.  She was a Girl Scout leader for a number of years.  Mrs. Hawkins served the Pittsburg Housing Authority as a board member for 30 years and has volunteered as a docent for the Depot Museum.  She served as President of the Camp County Retired Teachers Association for 3 years.  Jackie loved gardening and became a Master Gardener in her retirement.

Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her children Ruthanne (Kerry), Mitch, Angie, David (Lisa), and Paul (Kassie); 13 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving Mrs. Hawkins are 3 sisters, Alice (John), Anna (Craig), Elaine (Rob), and sister-in-law Mary Jane.

She was preceded in death by her husband Phillip Hawkins, her parents, Jack and Ann Sims, her brother David Sims, granddaughter Annie, and son-in-law Dan.

Pallbearers will be Davey Hawkins, J.D. Sims, Alan Faulhaber, Cooper Carter, Vernon Cutler, and Oran Gipson.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the First Baptist Church “Joy” Sunday School Class, Rochelle Hill, Carol Spencer and Ramona Posadas.
