Vernon “Greg” Gunn (Dad), age 61, of Pittsburg, passed away on September 2, 2025, at his home in Pittsburg, Texas. He was born on November 27. 1963, at The Edna Gladney Home in Fort Worth, Texas. A couple of days later, he was adopted by Vernon Leon Gunn and Virginia Rape Gunn, who lived in Amarillo, Texas, at the time. His sister, Janet Pennington, of Plano, Texas, tells the sweetest story of how she held her new baby brother all the way home to Amarillo. She was so proud to have the missing piece finally in her arms. She loved her little brother so much.
After spending most of his childhood years in Amarillo, Texas, he would later move to East Texas and become a 1982 Pittsburg High School graduate.
He worked as a welder and truck driver at Pilgrim’s Pride for 32 years. Greg was an extremely hard worker and very dedicated to his job. We all knew Greg as a hard worker, someone who gave 110% to everything he did, which he instilled in his children the importance of never giving up, even when faced with daunting tasks. He was also honored to be a truck driver at Joe Tex in Mount Vernon, Texas.
He was a member of Pittsburg Masonic Lodge for 31.5 years and was a very proud Master Mason. Greg had a servant’s heart.
Greg was a firm believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Greg loved the Lord and would want everyone to have a personal relationship with him.
He had a love for fishing, guns, collecting case knives, and spending time in his shop, crafting things for his friends and family.
In 2016 he was excited to find his birth family in Dallas, Texas. He was able to meet and stay in contact with his aunt Ingrid Burgan, brother Richard Conkle, and his sister Melissa Kunkle. His mother, Sonja Burgan Kunkle, passed away in 2002.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kelly Gail French Gunn, whom he married October 30, 1987; children, Vernon Tod Gunn and Amanda Gail Gunn of Pittsburg, Texas, and Mildon Funez of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and additional daughter-in-love, Rebecca Jean Spencer; his siblings, Janet Pennington and her husband Joe of Plano, Texas, Richard Conkle and Melissa Kunkle of Dallas, Texas; aunt, Ingrid Burgan of Dallas, Texas; In-laws, Johnny French and his wife Rhonda of Pittsburg, Texas, brother-in-law, Rex French and his wife Gena, of Jefferson, Texas; niece and nephews, Katlyn and Garrett French, of Jefferson, Texas, Toby Wayne Shelton, of Plano, Texas, great nephew, Dylan Shelton, of Plano, Texas, and many other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Leon Gunn and Virginia Rape Gunn; his grandparents, Jimmie Lee Rape and Vinnie Mae Rape, and Vernon Arthur Gunn and Cleo Bell Collins Gunn; birth mother, Sonja Burgan Kunkle; mother-in-law, Judy Gail Marshall French; grandparent-in-laws, Syble Jo Boyd French, Robert Weldon Marshall, and his wife Edna Murial Marshall.
A special thank you to our Life Group Friends Steve and Carol Wootten, for the love you gave to our family during this time.
Another special thank you to “Trae Boy” Marshall, for the continuous laughter that he gave Greg and our family.
A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Edna Gladney Home in Fort Worth, Texas, or the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge.
