Douglas Dale Sample

Mr. Doug Sample, age 89, of Pittsburg, passed away at his residence in Pittsburg on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born January 21, 1935 in Center, Texas to Willie and Mae Metcalf Sample.

Mr. Sample served in the United States Army specifically in the 2nd and 3rd Armored Division, Spear Head. He was a retired chicken farmer and worked at American Petra Fina. Additionally, he delivered newspapers from Tyler and Longview to the Pittsburg area for many years. Mr. Sample was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pittsburg.

His most cherished pastime was watching his grandkids and great grandkids playing sports, spending countless Saturdays at the baseball and soccer fields and even at the swimming pool. Family meant everything to him, and he will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Wilbanks Sample; children, Angie Dunavant and husband James, Bubba Sample and wife Rhonda, and Tammie Spiker and husband Ray; grandchildren, Candace Setina and husband Joe, Jennifer Rainey and husband Dugan, Samantha Roopchand and husband Bobby, Cyndel Wainwright and husband Jared, Amanda Sample, and Justin Sample; along with eighteen great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald Sample and wife Deborah; sisters-in-law, Deloris Sample, and Margie Elliot.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mae Metcalf Sample, great-grandchild, Rally Laken Roopchand; two brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Kyle Smith and Bro. Todd Elliot officiating. Interment to follow at Center Grove Baptist Cemetery in Linden. Pallbearers will be Bobby Roopchand, Joe Don Setina, Dugan Rainey, Jared Wainwright, Justin Sample, Joe P. Setina, Graydon Rainey, Tristan Roopchand, Everett Roopchand, and Cade Wainwright. There will be a visitation held before the service beginning at 1:00 P.M., at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, or charity of your choice.
