Becky Christensen Obituary

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Becky Christensen will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75225.

Nancy “Becky” Slover Christensen passed away peacefully on June 1, 2024. She took care of her family, friends, coworkers and community in ways that were profound, loving and selfless. While Becky will be dearly missed, we find comfort in the depth and authenticity of her faith and the promise of her eternal life in heaven. She was an empathetic, loving force in our lives who will forever be known for her unconditional love and whatever-you-need, no-matter-what approach to a life of service.

Becky was born on October 30, 1946, in Oak Cliff, Texas, to Nancy Tanner Slover and Alfred “Drummond” Slover. Drummond was a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, WWII Purple Heart recipient and an incredible father and Poppy. He and Nancy, a beloved wife, mother and Granny, met at Texas Christian University, married and then settled in Midland where Drummond and Nancy raised Becky and her younger brother, Bud. Becky cherished her childhood, loved her family and took impeccable care of her parents and brother throughout the duration of their lives.

Becky was an advanced student and tennis player at Midland High and graduated a year early from high school to attend Texas Tech University where she declared her major in math and pledged Kappa Alpha Theta. An illness her sophomore year and subsequent serious allergic reaction to penicillin prompted her return home to heal. The following year, she attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas while she recovered. Her parents then moved to Salt Lake City for Drummond’s career and Becky joined them to attend The University of Utah - all while keeping her watch set to “Texas time” to demonstrate her loyalty to her home state. There, she met and dated Louis Wayne “Chris” Christensen, a classmate, Utah native and her future husband.

Chris joined The United States Army after college during the Vietnam War and assumed he would be deployed there. He requested a week off to marry Becky at a small service with their family on April 3, 1968. Following their wedding, and to their surprise, instead of Vietnam he was deployed to Nuremberg, Germany. Becky joined him and they spent their first two years of marriage there while Chris served as a Sargent in the Army and Becky worked for American Express. When it was time for them to leave Germany, it was Becky’s notorious love of Texas that influenced their decision to settle in Dallas. There, Becky worked at Sanger Harris while commuting to classes at The University of North Texas, ultimately graduating with a BS in Education. Becky and Chris joyfully welcomed their son, Christopher, in 1973 and daughter, Kelly, in 1977. Becky loved her children immensely and was an incredible mom. She proudly and fervently supported them in all of their endeavors and was there to encourage, show up and “make it all better” at any given time.

Becky’s beautiful smile and signature laugh lit up a room and her hugs were memorable. She was a servant leader with integrity and an invaluable, no-fuss volunteer. She organized garage sales at Northway Christian Church and St. Mark’s School of Texas, delivered Meals on Wheels, drove teenagers across the country for summer youth group trips and was a mentor and tutor for children at underserved schools. She also enjoyed volunteering at different times of her life at The Salvation Army and Scottish Rite for Children. Becky planted thousands of flats of flowers and developed large-scale gardens for neighbors, nursing homes, churches and multiple schools. There was a time in her life when she rarely left the house without her signature chicken spaghetti casserole (or several) for someone in need or to cater lunch for an entire team of teachers.

Becky was humble, generous, and relentlessly unselfish. She was clearly called to help others - especially children of various backgrounds, teachers and school support staff through a remarkable career as a teacher and principal at multiple schools, including Preston Hollow Presbyterian Preschool, The Lamplighter School, Uplift Education and North Hills Preparatory School where she finished her career and retired in 2014. As discovered through thank you notes sent to her that were found tucked away, school janitors and maintenance staff would often find a homemade meal and envelope with some extra cash discreetly given to them when they needed it most. As school principal, you could find her shoulder-to-shoulder with her teachers on the coldest, rainiest days opening carpool doors to greet students; she would make regular trips to Walmart for coats, shoes or pantry staples when she noticed a child in need.

Becky was wildly capable, intelligent, witty, and fearless. While she accomplished much outside of the home, her family always came first and benefited from her boundless love and support. She became a grandmother to her first grandchild in 2009 and embarked on her most cherished role of her life with a new name: Gigi. Her five grandchildren, Taylor (14), Blake (12), Dane (11), Emma (9) and Kate (6), were the absolute collective joy of her life. These five, precious cousins exhibit so many of Becky’s qualities because of the time spent with, and loving influence of, their Gigi. She and Chris showed up as grandparents like they had for everything else in their lives: anytime, anyplace - making sure their grandkids knew with certainty that they were uniquely seen and loved whole-heartedly. Chris and Becky enjoyed 56 years of marriage and genuine partnership. They resided in Dallas until 2021 when they moved two hours East to Pittsburg to enjoy the piney woods of East Texas. Chris took incredible care of Becky throughout her life and especially the last decade as she navigated the challenges of living with Alzheimer’s.

Becky is preceded in death by her parents, Nancy Tanner and Alfred Drummond Slover and brother Alfred Drummond “Bud” Slover. She is survived by her husband, L. Wayne “Chris” Christensen; son Chris Christensen, daughter-in-law Liz, and their children Dane and Emma Christensen; daughter Kelly Christensen Oleson, son-in-law Drew, and their children Taylor, Blake and Kate Oleson. Becky has been a gift to all of us who were lucky enough to know and love her. She led a beautiful and meaningful life and provided a loving example we will continually strive to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or Scottish Rite for Children (scottishriteforchildren.org/donate). Our family is beyond grateful for the outpouring of love and thoughtful messages during this time.
